China University Intakes 2027: March & September Deadlines for Sri Lankans

China university intake 2027 explained for Sri Lankans: September and March deadlines, CSC, CSCA and visa dates. See the month-by-month calendar.

In short: for a China university intake 2027, Sri Lankan students have two choices: the main September 2027 intake, which covers almost all degree programmes and nearly every scholarship, and a smaller March 2027 (spring) intake, used mainly for Chinese-language courses and a few degree programmes. For September 2027, the real work starts in November–December 2026, because scholarship and university windows open then and many close between February and May 2027.

This calendar marks every date as either official (taken from a named official page) or typical — confirm (based on the pattern of past years). All dates were checked 23 Oct 2026. Universities publish their 2027 notices at different times, so confirm each date on the university or scholarship page before you rely on it. What is the difference between the September and March intakes in China?

The September intake is China's main academic intake: degree programmes start in early September, and the Chinese Government (CSC) Scholarship is built around it. The March intake is the spring semester start. It is mainly for Chinese-language (non-degree) students and a limited number of degree programmes, and it has far fewer scholarships.

A useful March-intake reference point is Shanghai International Studies University's intensive Chinese programme, which set its spring 2026 deadline as 31 December 2025 and its autumn 2026 deadline as 30 June 2026 (official, for the 2026 cycle). A spring 2027 deadline around late December 2026 is therefore likely, but that is typical — confirm on the SISU page.

What are the key deadlines for the September 2027 intake?

The key deadlines for a Sri Lankan student targeting September 2027 are the CSC Type A window through Sri Lanka's Ministry of Education (typically November–January), CSC Type B and university scholarship windows (roughly November 2026 to March 2027), self-funded deadlines that can run to May 2027, and a CSCA exam sitting before you submit an undergraduate application.

How the scholarship routes differ

Our Chinese Government Scholarship guide for Sri Lankans explains Type A and Type B in full.

Named university deadlines (most recent published cycle)

UniversityRouteWindow (2026 intake)Status
Huazhong University of Science and Technology (Wuhan)CSC Type B15 Oct 2025 – 1 Mar 2026Official (2026 cycle)

Zhejiang University, ZJU-UoE InstituteUndergraduate BSc programmesOpens November, closes 31 May 2026Official (2026 cycle)

These are 2026 dates. Universities usually keep a similar pattern year to year, but they move dates, add rounds and extend deadlines, so treat the 2027 equivalents as typical — confirm. Popular programmes and scholarship quotas fill early, so aim to apply in the first round.

CSCA sessions: what is confirmed

The CSCA (China Scholastic Competency Assessment) runs five sessions a year from 2026, in January, March, April, June and December, according to the Shanghai Government's CSCA FAQ (official months). December, April and June sittings are scheduled for Asia-Pacific daytime hours, which suits Sri Lanka. Exact 2027 days had not been published when we checked; confirm them on the official CSCA site. The same FAQ says the CSCA is required for undergraduate applicants to Chinese Government Scholarship universities for the 2026 and 2027 academic years, with fees of CNY 450 for one subject and CNY 700 for two or more. See our CSCA exam guide for Sri Lankans and how to register for the CSCA.

HSK dates in Sri Lanka

The Confucius Institute at the University of Kelaniya lists expected HSK sessions on 23 August, 17 October and 13 December 2026. 2027 dates were not yet published; 2026 sittings were also held in January and June, so a similar pattern is likely (typical — confirm). If your programme is Chinese-taught, book an HSK sitting at least two months before your application deadline so results arrive in time. Our HSK guide for Sri Lanka covers levels and preparation.

Document lead times

Documents are the most common cause of missed deadlines. Allow roughly four to eight weeks (typical — confirm) for certified results and translations, a police clearance report, attestation and the Foreigner Physical Examination Form. The documents guide for studying in China lists each item and where to get it in Sri Lanka.

What is the timeline for the March 2027 intake?

The March 2027 timeline is short: apply between September and December 2026, receive the admission letter and JW202 in January 2027, and get the visa and fly in February. Because the March intake is mostly self-funded Chinese-language study, there is usually no CSC step.

MonthWhat to doDate status
Sept–Nov 2026Choose a language or spring-start programme; prepare passport, results, police report and medical form.Typical — confirm
Dec 2026Applications close at many universities (SISU's spring 2026 deadline was 31 Dec 2025).Typical — confirm
Jan 2027Admission letter and JW202 arrive; pay fees if required.Typical — confirm
Feb 2027Apply for the visa in Colombo, fly to China, register late February – early March.Typical — confirm

When does the China student visa paperwork arrive?

For September entry, the university normally posts the admission letter and JW201 or JW202 form in June or July (typical — confirm). You then apply for an X1 (study over 180 days) or X2 visa at the Chinese Embassy in Colombo, where processing usually takes about four working days. Apply as soon as the documents arrive. Full steps are in our China student visa guide for Sri Lankans.

What should you do if you missed a China university deadline?

Missing one deadline rarely ends a September 2027 plan. Chinese universities stagger their windows, and self-funded deadlines run months later than scholarship ones.

  1. Check for later rounds and extensions. Tongji's College of Civil Engineering extended its 2026 self-funded undergraduate deadline from 30 April to 15 May; extensions like this are common.
  2. Switch route. If CSC Type A has closed, apply for Type B or a university or provincial scholarship at another university.
  3. Apply self-funded. Self-funded windows often stay open until May or June. Check the cost of studying in China first.
  4. Use the March intake. Start a Chinese-language semester in March 2027, build your HSK level, then join a degree in September.
  5. Defer to September 2028 if your target programme only takes CSC students, and use the year to raise your CSCA and HSK scores.

Frequently asked questions

When is the main university intake in China for 2027?

The main intake is September 2027, when nearly all bachelor's, MBBS, master's and PhD programmes begin and the Chinese Government Scholarship cycle runs. Applications typically open from November 2026 and close between February and May 2027 depending on the university and funding route, so Sri Lankan students should start preparing documents by November 2026.

What is the CSC scholarship 2027 deadline for Sri Lankan students?

There are two routes with different deadlines. CSC Type A goes through the Sri Lanka Ministry of Education portal, which usually closes between November and January (the 2023 notice closed on 15 December). CSC Type B goes directly to universities, often closing between late February and April 2027. Confirm each date on the official notice before applying.

Can I start university in China in March 2027?

Yes, but options are limited. The March (spring) intake is mainly for Chinese-language courses, plus a few self-funded degree programmes at some universities. Scholarships are rare. Applications usually close around December 2026, so a March start suits students who want to build their HSK level before a September degree.

Do I need the CSCA exam for a September 2027 undergraduate application?

If you are applying for an undergraduate programme at a Chinese Government Scholarship university, the Shanghai Government CSCA FAQ says the CSCA is required for the 2026 and 2027 academic years. Sessions run in January, March, April, June and December, so book a sitting that gives results before your application deadline.

When will I get my JW202 form and visa for the September intake?

Universities usually courier the admission letter and JW201 or JW202 form in June or July. With these, you apply for an X1 study visa at the Chinese Embassy in Colombo, where processing usually takes about four working days, which leaves time to fly out in late August.
